Custom IBC Solutions
Not every IBC need fits into a standard service box. Some businesses require modified fittings, branded containers, scheduled pickup routes, consignment inventory, or even creative repurposing of IBC totes for rain harvesting, aquaponics, and garden projects. Our custom solutions team builds programs around your specific requirements -- no matter how unconventional.
Custom Modifications & Configurations
We modify reconditioned and new IBC totes to meet your exact operational specifications. Every modification is performed by trained technicians and tested before delivery.
Custom Valve & Fitting Packages
Swap the standard 2-inch butterfly valve for cam-lock fittings, banjo couplings, tri-clamp sanitary connections, or quick-disconnect adapters. We stock fittings in polypropylene, stainless steel, and brass to match your product compatibility requirements.
Branded Labels & Marking
Add your company logo, product identification, handling instructions, batch codes, or regulatory labels to each tote. We offer pressure-sensitive vinyl labels, direct stenciling, and heat-transfer printing. Labeling services are available for both the bottle and the cage frame.
Color-Coded Cage Systems
Assign different cage colors to distinguish between product lines, departments, or facility locations. We powder-coat cage frames in your specified colors with industrial-grade finish that resists chipping, UV fading, and chemical exposure. Minimum order: 10 totes per color.
Heating Blanket Integration
For products that require temperature maintenance during storage or transit (chocolate, resins, oils that solidify), we install insulated heating blankets with thermostat control. Available in 120V and 240V configurations with adjustable temperature range from 40 degrees F to 160 degrees F.
Mixer & Agitator Mounts
We fabricate custom mounting brackets on the top frame of IBC cages to accommodate portable mixers and agitators. Mounts are engineered for specific mixer models and include vibration-dampening hardware. Ideal for paint, coating, and chemical blending applications.
Sight Gauge & Level Indicators
Install clear sight tubes or electronic level sensors on the exterior of IBC bottles for real-time fill-level monitoring. Sight gauges include gallon markings; electronic sensors integrate with standard 4-20mA or wireless protocols for remote monitoring applications.
Bulk Programs & Scheduled Services
For businesses with ongoing IBC needs, we offer structured programs that simplify procurement, disposal, and logistics on a recurring basis.
Scheduled Recurring Pickups
If your operation generates empty IBCs on a predictable cadence, we set up a standing pickup schedule -- weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly -- so a truck arrives automatically. No need to call, email, or submit forms each time. The driver loads, counts, and leaves you a receipt. Payment is processed automatically under your agreed terms.
Benefits:
- Zero administrative overhead for your team
- Guaranteed pickup -- no scheduling delays
- Net 15 payment terms for recurring sellers
- Adjustable schedule -- ramp up or down as needed
- Dedicated driver who knows your facility layout
Consignment Inventory
For high-volume buyers, we offer consignment inventory at your facility. We stage a predetermined quantity of clean, reconditioned IBCs at your site. You draw from inventory as needed and are billed only for units consumed. We replenish automatically based on agreed par levels.
How It Works:
- We deliver and stage IBCs at your location
- You use them at your own pace -- no upfront purchase
- Monthly billing for consumed units only
- Automatic replenishment when stock hits par level
- Mix of sizes and grades customized to your needs
Bulk Purchase Discounts
Volume buyers receive tiered pricing that decreases as quantities increase. We can lock in pricing for up to 12 months on large commitments, protecting you from market fluctuations and ensuring budget predictability.
| Quantity | Discount Tier |
|---|---|
| 1-24 totes | Standard pricing |
| 25-99 totes | 5-10% volume discount |
| 100-499 totes | 10-15% volume discount |
| 500+ totes | Custom contract pricing |
Closed-Loop IBC Management
The ultimate custom program: we manage the full lifecycle of your IBC fleet. We supply reconditioned totes, pick them up when empty, clean and recondition them, and return them to you -- creating a continuous loop. You never buy or dispose of IBCs again. This is the most environmentally responsible and cost-effective approach for high-volume users.
Ideal For:
- Food & beverage manufacturers shipping liquid products
- Chemical distributors with regular fill-and-ship cycles
- Agricultural operations with seasonal bulk liquid needs
- Any business using 100+ IBCs per year
IBC Repurposing & Creative Conversions
IBC totes are remarkably versatile structures. Beyond their original industrial purpose, they can be converted into practical solutions for water collection, gardening, aquaculture, and more. We prepare and modify IBCs for these creative applications.
Rain Harvesting Systems
Convert a used IBC tote into a high-capacity rainwater collection system. A single 275-gallon IBC captures and stores enough rainwater to irrigate a large garden for weeks. Our rain harvesting conversions include:
- Top-mounted mesh screen to filter debris and prevent mosquito entry
- Gutter downspout adapter (fits standard 2x3 and 3x4 downspouts)
- Overflow port with hose barb for daisy-chaining multiple tanks
- Bottom spigot with garden-hose adapter for easy watering
- Optional opaque cage wrap to prevent algae growth
- Food-grade totes used -- safe for garden irrigation
Raised Garden Planters
IBC totes make excellent raised-bed planters when cut and prepared properly. The steel cage provides structural support, the plastic bottle acts as a durable liner, and the pallet base elevates the planter for ergonomic gardening and drainage. Our planter conversions include:
- Bottle cut to desired height (12, 18, or 24 inches typical)
- Drainage holes drilled in bottom with landscape fabric lining
- Cage trimmed and bent edges safety-capped
- Optional caster wheels for mobile planter capability
- Optional drip irrigation manifold mounted to cage
- Food-grade totes only -- safe for vegetable gardening
Aquaponics Systems
IBC totes are the most popular base for DIY and commercial aquaponics setups. The 275-gallon capacity is ideal for fish tanks, and the cut-off top section becomes the grow bed. We prepare aquaponics-ready IBC kits that include:
- Fish tank section (bottom 2/3 of IBC) with cleaned, food-grade bottle
- Grow bed section (top 1/3) with bell siphon ports pre-drilled
- Bulkhead fittings installed between tank and grow bed
- Overflow and drain plumbing roughed in
- Cage framework preserved as structural support for grow bed
- Optional: pump mount, aeration port, and inspection window
Have a different repurposing idea? We have built custom IBC conversions for composting systems, emergency water storage, livestock watering stations, mobile car wash rigs, and more. If it involves an IBC, we can probably build it.

Custom Solutions in Action
Every custom project is unique. Here are examples of how we have solved real-world IBC challenges for businesses and individuals with non-standard needs.
Cosmetics Manufacturer: Color-Coded Fleet
A cosmetics company needed to visually distinguish IBCs used for different product lines (fragrances, lotions, hair care) on their production floor to prevent cross-contamination during filling.
We supplied 120 reconditioned food-grade IBCs with cages powder-coated in four distinct colors -- blue for fragrances, green for lotions, red for hair care, and white for raw material receiving. Each set received custom vinyl labels with the product line name and handling instructions.
Zero cross-contamination incidents since implementation. Operators identify the correct IBC by color instantly, reducing filling errors by 100%. The visual system also helped during FDA inspections, as auditors commended the clear product segregation.
Winery: Closed-Loop IBC Program
A winery processing 50,000 gallons of grape juice annually was spending $12,000 per year on new IBCs and another $3,500 disposing of empties. They wanted a more economical and sustainable approach.
We implemented a closed-loop program: we supplied 80 reconditioned food-grade IBCs, established a bi-weekly pickup schedule for empties, cleaned them at our facility with FDA-compliant protocols, and returned them ready for refilling.
Annual container costs dropped from $15,500 to $6,200 -- a 60% reduction. The winery diverted 240 IBCs from landfill in the first year and now features the program in their sustainability marketing to wine club members.
Urban Farm: Aquaponics Installation
An urban farming cooperative in Louisville wanted to build a 6-tank aquaponics system but commercial aquaponics tanks were prohibitively expensive at $800-$1,200 each.
We supplied 6 food-grade reconditioned IBCs, prepared them as aquaponics kits with fish tank sections, grow bed sections, bulkhead fittings, bell siphon ports, and structural cage frameworks. We delivered and assisted with initial positioning at the farm.
Total project cost was $1,800 versus $6,000+ for commercial tanks -- a 70% savings. The system has been running for 18 months, producing tilapia and leafy greens for the cooperative's farm stand.
Chemical Blender: Mixer-Mount IBCs
A specialty chemical blending company needed IBCs that could accept their portable drum mixers for in-container blending. Standard IBCs lack a proper mounting point, causing mixer instability and safety concerns.
We fabricated custom steel mounting brackets welded to the top frame of 40 IBC cages, engineered to fit the client's specific mixer model (1/3 HP portable). Mounts include vibration-dampening rubber pads and quick-release clamps for easy mixer attachment and removal.
Mixer stability improved dramatically, eliminating the wobble and safety hazard of the previous jury-rigged setup. The client ordered 20 additional mixer-mount IBCs in the following quarter as they expanded production.
Custom Solutions FAQ
Can you modify IBCs I already own, or do I have to buy from you?
Both options work. You can ship your existing IBCs to our facility for modification, or we can supply reconditioned or new IBCs and perform modifications before delivery. If you send your own totes, we recommend shipping them clean and empty. We will inspect each unit before modification and flag any that are not suitable for the requested work.
How does the prototype process work for new custom configurations?
For any modification we have not done before, we build a single prototype unit at a reduced cost. You review the prototype -- either in person at our facility or via detailed photos and video -- and provide feedback. We make adjustments based on your input, then produce the full order once you approve. The prototype process typically adds 5-7 business days to the overall timeline but prevents expensive mistakes on large orders.
What is the minimum order for custom powder-coated cages?
Our minimum is 10 totes per color. Powder coating requires dedicated setup for each color, and smaller batches are not cost-effective. If you need fewer than 10 of a specific color, we can offer spray-paint application as an alternative with a lower minimum (5 totes), though the finish is less durable than powder coating.
Do custom modifications void the DOT or UN certification of the IBC?
It depends on the modification. Valve changes with compatible OEM parts do not affect certification. Structural modifications to the cage (like mixer mounts or cut-downs for planters) may affect the container's rating for hazardous material transport. We clearly document which modifications impact regulatory certification and advise you accordingly before proceeding. If you need the modified IBC to maintain its DOT/UN rating, we design the modification to preserve compliance.
Can you set up a closed-loop program for a small company?
Yes, though the economics work best at scale. Our standard closed-loop programs are designed for companies using 100+ IBCs per year. For smaller operations (50-100 IBCs/year), we offer a simplified version: we supply reconditioned totes, buy them back when empty, clean and recondition them, and sell them back to you at a discounted rate. It is not a formal lease, but it achieves a similar circular economy effect.
How durable is the powder coating on color-coded cages?
Our industrial powder coat finish is rated for outdoor use and resists UV fading, chemical splash, and mechanical abrasion significantly better than wet paint. Typical lifespan is 5-10 years in normal industrial environments. The coating is applied at 200-400 microns thickness after thorough surface preparation (blast cleaning and phosphate treatment). We offer a 2-year warranty against peeling, flaking, and excessive fading under normal use conditions.
Compliance & Quality Standards for Custom Work
Custom does not mean cutting corners. Every modification we perform adheres to the same quality standards and regulatory compliance as our standard services.
DOT Compliance Preserved
For custom modifications on IBCs that will be used for hazmat transport, we ensure all work maintains DOT 49 CFR 173.28 compliance. Valve changes use rated, compatible components. Structural modifications are engineered to preserve load-bearing capacity and stacking strength. Each modified IBC is tested and relabeled accordingly.
FDA Food-Grade Standards
Custom modifications on food-grade IBCs use only FDA-approved materials. Valves, gaskets, fittings, and any adhesives or coatings that contact the stored product comply with FDA 21 CFR 177 for indirect food contact. We maintain certificates of compliance for all food-contact materials used in custom work.
Welding Certifications
Structural modifications that involve welding -- mixer mounts, cage reinforcements, custom brackets -- are performed by certified welders using approved procedures. Weld quality is inspected visually and by function test. All welded modifications are rated for the intended load with appropriate safety factors.
Quality Documentation
Every custom project generates a specification sheet documenting exactly what was done, what materials were used, and what testing was performed. For repeat orders, the spec sheet becomes the production standard, ensuring consistency across batches. All documentation is retained for a minimum of 5 years.
Custom Project Guarantees
We stand behind every custom project with clear guarantees. Custom work carries inherent complexity, so we build safeguards into every engagement.
Prototype Approval Required
For new custom configurations, we never proceed to full production without your explicit prototype approval. This eliminates the risk of producing a batch that does not meet your expectations. Prototype modifications are included at no extra charge.
Workmanship Warranty
All custom modifications carry a 90-day workmanship warranty. If a modification fails under normal use within 90 days -- a welded bracket breaks, a powder coat peels, a custom valve leaks -- we repair or replace the affected unit at no charge.
Fixed-Price Quotes
Once you approve a custom project quote, the price is locked. We do not charge overruns, change orders (unless you request changes), or surprise material surcharges. The quote you sign is the price you pay, period.
On-Time Delivery Commitment
We quote a delivery timeline on every custom project and commit to it. If we miss the quoted delivery date by more than 2 business days, we discount the project by 5% per day of delay, up to 15% maximum. Our on-time delivery rate for custom projects exceeds 94%.
Dedicated Project Manager
Every custom project with 10+ totes is assigned a dedicated project manager who serves as your single point of contact from consultation through delivery. They coordinate sourcing, production scheduling, quality checks, and logistics so you always know exactly where your project stands.
Repeat Order Consistency
For recurring custom orders, we maintain detailed production specs on file so that every batch matches the first. Same materials, same dimensions, same finish quality. If a component supplier changes, we notify you in advance and seek approval before substituting.
